Subject: School Calendar
Hello,
With regard to the interruptions I mentioned in yesterday's meetings, one thing that may help alleviate the problem is a school calendar, which may be put on to the school website. A recurring problem we've experienced, for example, is that in the past 2 years the senior panoramic picture was scheduled the same day an AP exam was scheduled to be given. This year it was AP Lit and I believe it was AP Language last year. As you can imagine, it was quite stressful for the kids. Both times we had to rush to make sure we were in the testing room and ready to go before 9:00am. The AP exams are scheduled by the CollegeBoard and they are dates we can not negotiate. But, if we had a real school calendar that had more than just TAKS testing dates on it, one that would include field trips, fundraising activities, auditorium events, UIL atheltic and academic events, professional development, etc. This would help eliminate the chaos we often experience, expecially with really important events. Perhaps this is an item for the next agenda.

I totally agree with Mr. Balderas because I remember last year that we had to really work hard to find out if there were any other events that were going on during our planned pta meetings or events and sometimes there were events that other organizations within the school that were being carried out and no one knew, therefore causing lack of participation as well as communication breakdown. Therefore, I think a good calendar of events should be planned and distributed in order to plan and have full participation and preparation.
Thanks

Yes, I agree 100% especially when we will have to share facilities. Who will get priority Sam Houston or the 9th grade academy? Web-page and a visible bulletin board would be a good starting point for announcements and school calendar of events.
Example:
Auditorium scheduled for two events same time same date.

I agree that a school-wide calendar ( available to teachers, parents, and students ) would help avoid problems during the school year. I also agree that it would might encourage more participation on the part of parents and teacher since they will be able arrange their schedule around the calendar. About two years ago, we did have calendars that were available to teachers on a monthly basis. While they were helpful to the teacher, students should also have access to information about events or activities occuring on their campus. There should be one designated go-to person ( one in each campus) in charge of maintaining/updating the calendar who must also be made aware of the events planned by both school sites that would require the use of the common shared areas. Since there are many activities, programs, and events that must have prior administrative approval, there should be ample time to provide the information to this person and have it placed on the calendar.
