Help Name the New Sam Houston(s):

If Texas Education Commissioner Robert Scott approves the plan, the campus formerly known as Sam Houston High School will split into two new schools this fall—a ninth-grade academy with a longer, more rigorous school day, and a high-tech center for students in grades 10, 11, and 12. HISD is accepting suggestions for new names for both new campuses. To contribute an idea, please post a comment.

I feel that the school should keep Sam Houston in the name. Sam Houston Technology School would be good. Also I feel that the school colors should stay the same black and gold. It is not fair to the Seniors that the colors should change. I have two daughter at Sam Houston and one is a Senior. They both have lettermen Jackets with the black and gold colors. I think that should be taken into consideration. I paid a good penny for those gold letter. Also so much has already being taken from the students that do care to go to Sam Houston. So my opioion is to leave Ssm Houston in the name some how and to leave the school colors the same Black and GOLD!

The name should be changed under the condition that "Sam Houston" remains in the title. As for colors, I believe that we should keep black and gold. Our high school has always had the most unique of colors opposed to any other school. I believe that it should stay that way.

I feel that change in a positive direction is GREAT! Since there will be two schools, pehaps ONE can keep the original Sam Houston name. Say the Sam Houston Ninth Grade Academy. Then the 10th-12th school, could be names like many of the other "specialized: campuses LECJ, HSPVA etc. This one can be The High School for Business and Technology. I also feel that if we are trying to change the attitude of these parents/students, then the schools in general should be modernized. Update it so it is appealing, and have a "NEW" feeling to it. It may be a strech, BUT, new items are more likely to be taken care of if the students are respected and seen as responisible students. I feel that giving the school a name with distiction can help. I also feel that colors should not be an issue. CHANGE is and can be for the better of EVERYTHING. Just because you have certain things now that YES may have cost a pretty penny, should not be an issue. THE EDUCATION YOU CHILD GETS should be the first and most important issue. Colors add to the whole dynamic of the school, but should NOT be the top priority issue here. Giving your children a school filled with excellent educational experiences, and NEW ONES, will help your child get to where they need to get........COLLEGE! That is the goal of our district and really should be your goal as a student and as a parent for your children.

Yes I know that money and school colors should not be an issue, but you have to understand that these students and teachers have had so much taken from them. Some have even lost their jobs and were good teacher. There are students that are going to be switching schools. So that is a loss for them. Then you have the seniors that wanted to graduate from the old Sam Houston High School. Who now will never get that chance to do so. They will have to graduate under a new school name. You talk about respect. Just think these students and teachers will always be known as "THAT SCHOOL". They will never be known who they are, but as the school that got closed. They will never get the same respect. My childs education is the most important issue, but so is their dignity and pride. You are not looking at the whole picture. Alot issue have come into play with the restructuring of the school. You are not the student that is going to be going to this school. You are not the athlete that has to play all of these other schools. That you know will be talking about you and your school. EDUCATION is our number one goal. So is my childs happiness!!!!! You don't have to go there. The students, teachers and staff do!

Personally I Think That The Name Of The School Should Be Specialized. For Example:

Sam Houston: High School For Academics & Technology.

Or Another Suggestion Would Be:

Sam Houston High School For Careers & Professions

I prefer the school keeping Sam Houston in its name, because this year's seniors already have shirts that contain that name, it wouldn't be fair to them. All of the hard work that they put since their 9th grade year, the school should put into consideration all of their hard work.

I like the sound of :

Sam Houston: High School For Academics & Technology.

The name shouldn't be changed it should stay "Sam Houston". As for colors, I believe that we should keep black and gold. Our high school has always had the most unique of colors opposed to any other school. I believe that it should stay the way it is.

Everyone has suggested names such as Sam Houston Technology Center, Sam Houston Business Academy, long titles that reiterate what every other title states. If the title would be something like Sam Houston High School for Careers and Profression but it would just end up being called Sam just as it always has. The actual name of the school is Sam Houston Senior High School, our name varies everywhere. For example, according to DJROTC, we are referred to as Houston High School. There is a memorial in front of the school that states Sam Houston Senior High and to everyone else we are Sam Houston High School. I believe since we won't have any freshmen then we should be formally known as Sam Houston Senior Academy and the ninth grader's campus could be called Sam Houston Freshmen Academy. An academy is known for its renowned education, when people hear academy many think prestigious education. I believe the school should be named Sam Houston Senior Academy, coming from someone who is graduating Class of 2009, I will leave Sam Houson with many good memories and an education that even Harvard would admire because Sam Houston offers great education for those who really want it.

Name the 9th grade school after Juan Seguin, General Sam Houston's second in command who took the actual surrender from Santa Ana. Leave the name Sam Houston for the Technoloby school. After all, "TEXAS" history should be preserved. Had it not been for their perseverance and expertise, then we would all be speaking Spanish and answering to the government in Mexico City.

How about Sam Houston Institute for Information Technology, Engineering and Science.

Keep the traditions alive such as school song, colors, etc. Preserve Texas History.

It is one of the oldest schools in the to date in the ste of Texas.

I agree with the top about keeping Sam Houston , althouhg I do think that:

Sam Houston: High School For Academics & Technology.

Is a good idea.

Sam Houston will always remain in the heart's of those that: laughed, were in athletics, cheared, danced, marched in band, sang, cried, sweat, and learned there. The name cannot be changed. Therefore, with the additional restructuring there should be an additional name. The elevation and pristige will speak on its own. Administration, Teachers, Parents, Students Alumni--There is no where to go but up. We are at ground zero and we will succeed.

Sam Houston's colors should not change and that should not be an issue. I like the idea of the 9th grade center being named after Juan Seguin. I also say keep the Sam Houston name imbedded in the new name.

Keep The name it's part of Texas History and so are the colors.

The name should most definitely be changed to show that this is a new school reopening however it should still have sam houston in it. Also the school colors should also change. I don't care what others beileve. What I do know is that we need new colors. Full of light and positiveness. Black and gold is just dull and not optimistic. The school uniform should be plaid and something cute. Also the school should sell the uniforms, that way we wouldn't have to be shopping for hours on something specific. Last year uniform should not be worn again for that school is closed.

As an '85 graduate of Sam I would hate to see the name and colors change. Find a solution to incorporate the name into the new learning academies.

For 10-12 they should leave Sam Houston High School for Business and Technology and as for the ninth grade center they should name it simply Sam Houston Ninth Grade Center.

In response to the comment made by an anonymous Parent apparently, I am a school related employee and have been in the district and seen the MANY years of trying to get a positive change in many school INCLUDING Sam Houston. I Understand very well that these students have had something close to heart taken away from them. I myself had many friends and colleagues lose their jobs as you said, and it is heartbreaking, but again moving the right direction and in a positive one, then perhaps if the parents supported this change then so would the students. Teachers had no choice but to accept the very much needed change. Face it, TAKS is not going anywhere, and many students were NOT passing. YES, there was an improvement the last few years, but this was after a second chance and another one and another. How many SECOND chances can you give. Also, students go through school changes all the time. From Elementary to Middle, to High school then to College, and sometimes even in college. Change is a part of LIFE. This is not just a loss to students but for ANYONE that was apart of the Sam Houston Feeder pattern. The Seniors that will graduate from the New school will still graduate; it should not matter what school you graduated from. All high school seniors get the SAME HS Diploma. Keeping a name just for the sake of respect is not keeping focused on what your goal should be. WHO CARES if they talk about what you said they would say "THAT SCHOOL" If you knew it has been seen as THAT SCHOOL for quite some time. I am also sorry but I am looking at the BIGGER picture and the WHOLE picture. Parents, students and even those few Faculty and staff that wanted their children and students to succeed, they will continue on doing so REGARDLESS of the name and colors. If the school as a WHOLE and the community as a whole put their efforts together A LONG TIME AGO, then maybe this would not be the situation. All of these other school you mention is ridiculous to think about. What are we five year olds. Who CARES what they think! All that should matter is that your child is getting the SAME EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EDUCATION THAT THE OTHER students are getting at the other schools. Wanting and needing are two different things. Students and some misguided parents may WANT to have the same things happen just like the old Sam Houston, just because its not going to make them happy, but that is not what the district and Board of Education felt was NEEDED! If you want to talk about respect, the Board Of Education is something your not respecting. They made to decision. Complain all you want, ultimately, things get done a certain way to improve. Like I said I myself am sad that yes some great teachers and colleagues had to go, but you know what, the world did not end. We have to move forward and think positively. I am glad that you are one of the parents that does feel "EDUCATION is our number one goal" and I hope that you can convince the other parents of that as well.
