I am a current student in Sam Houston and Cheerleader and I am writing as a concerned student. Some of the decisions that are being made are being made over the student body. I can speak for the whole student body and say we have not had any say or opinion in the choices that are being made. I fully understand why the school is making these decisions; to make this school an overall better school to be proud of. But taking away some of the good teachers that have taught us so much and believed in us since day one and not only that but have also befriended us [and believe me when i say it is so hard to reach into students these days] and getting more and more strick with our privilges and making so many changes. But i can tell you this much taking away the privilege to wear blue jeans is like taking what little we have left. I know privileges have to be earned and so we are just asking to have that one little privilege. Today my cheerleading coach/former teacher has informed me the school has decided to let her go. The whole squad including myself were sadened to hear this news. I know i am only a student and i have no say in to whether she stays or goes and i know it was your decision to make but Mrs.Boyd has so many quialities to offer. She is not only a teacher or coach but she is as we say an "Inspiration leader". She has pushed us to bigger and better things that we thought were not possible. She has pushed us to accomplish so many things. From experience as being one of her former students she honestly cares for her students and makes sure she does everything in her power for her students to succeed. I was a student who made C's and D's on every report card but with her inpsiration all that changed and my grades went up to A's and B's. Yes i could have done it myself but if she didnt believe in me. I know you are thinking that i am only making this statement because she is my coach but she is more than my coach. We love our school and our school spirit but because of some of the changes the school is about to make its really hard to have high spirits. I think its ludicrous not to have a Varsity football team. Homecoming without a Varsity football team? Do you realize how many good players we will be loosing and the school would be changing a tradition that we have had for so many years. Also think about how it would look to have your own school mates playing against you. Also not only would you be splitting up a team that has been playing together for over a year but you will also be splitting up a bond. Having to seperate from your playmates who you have trusted and confided in to play at another school having to start all over. Think of the seniors, this is they're last year to play and having to start that bond and trust all over again and for what? to be seperated from them too the following year and not only that but playing against they're own team. How would it feel to have another school's spirit instead of our school's spirit? What is so wrong with having a Varsity football team?

Keep in mind our motto in all this "Si Se Puede" and as our motto says "yes we can" then let's keep our Varsity Team

Congratulations on deciding to use a blog to invite community input! This is an excellent use of Web 2.0 technology for community and student voice/engagement in school leadership and decision-making. I sincerely congratulate you on the courage to promote discussion suing this medium!

Please continue to use this medium and show your community that you take their comments on this blog seriously by at least addressing them on the blog or in community meetings -- even if their suggestions are not possible given the constraints of the state guidelines.

I wish all of you -- the new administration, faculty, students, and community of Sam Houston -- the very best and I hope that the repurposing/restructuring does lead to improved student performance.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you...

Best Regards,
A concerned fellow HISD educator

I hope that the changes the administration will better the educational climate for the students, but I also hope this is a wake up call to not only parents, but other schools who are riding this NCLB rollercoaster. I am concerned that Sam is headed in the direction of another charter school, not an open school of choice. It is one thing to "allow" students to attend any school in the district, it is another to force those schools to admit them. Historically, this has been a problem for Sam students. Although many of our laws are broken and twisted to fit whichever administrator or president is flavor of the decade, we do still have laws about open access to education for ALL, not only those who will be headed to college. I worry that the community will ultimately be mistreated and bamboozled in a very slow and hidden process of change.

I was just curious as to whether the students had any say in what the focus of the new schools would be. Who decided on Math, Science, and technology? Is that what will really inspire the students to come to school and do well? What input have the students had? It seems they have been through a trying time. It's a shame that it takes the state to step in to give the students what they deserve.

Where do I start? We have been having our on converstations about the fate of our beloved school. Many of us has bowed to the fact that the name will change. One of our classmates brought up something Mr. Carroll(former drama teacher since passed away) use to always say "A rose by any other name would still smell as sweet" It's not the name that truly holds the memories, it's the campus. We had a great time at Sam and many of our class has gone on to achieve great things. We have many teacher, Vice Prins, Prins. Investment Bankers, Relators, Military Personnel, the list goes on and on. There were rough things going on there when we graduated and we managed to do more. A big part of that is because of certain teachers, as the one girl stated about a teacher that touched her. There are two teachers that I know of that taught me, who are still in fact at Sam Houston. Ms. Chevalier and Mr. Kelt AKA Coach. These two people helped mold me into the person I am today. Ms. C. was always right there to help with whatever, and Coach never taught a boring class. Bubbaheads is what he called us. I am just a branch of a long line of Sam Houston Students. My parents both former SH students, their brothers and sisters all Sam Houston students, as well as my own brothers and sister. I have family members who attended SH when it was downtown and called Central HS. There is to much history in that school to go to the wayside, the oldest newspaper, the world's oldest drill team! Do your research. Lydon B Johnson was a teacher there. It brings tears to my eyes to think of Sam Houston being no more, but in the restructing if that is what must be done, don't lose those teachers that have made impacts on childrens lives that still remember sitting in their classes twenty years ago. They must have done something right! Ms. C and Coach Kelt if you see this, just know that the Class of 1989 love you and thank you for everything you engrained in our memories!
